How to Make Bioethanol

August 11th, 2008

Last month, I tried to learn how to make bioethanol. Could you make bioethanol?

Bioethanol or ethanol is a biofuel that is traditionally produced from the fermentation of starch or sugar crops such as corn, sugar beet and sugar cane. Bioethanol can also be produced from other feedstocks, such as jatropha or switchgrass. It can also be derived from cellulose, grass or even waste materials. This is known as second generation bioethanol.

Bioethanol is an important renewable energy source. Bioethanol can be blended with petroleum for use in petroleum-engine vehicles. Bioethanol is a high octane fuel and has replaced lead as an octane enhancer in petrol. The most common blend is 10% ethanol and 90% petrol (E10). Vehicle engines require no modifications to run on E10 and vehicle warranties are unaffected also. Only flexible fuel vehicles can run on up to 85% ethanol and 15% petrol blends (E85). As premium fuel, the demand is so high. Bioethanol is also an environment friendly alternative fuel for motor vehicle and stove. In addition, bioethanol is also used in cosmetic and drink industry.

How to Make Biodiesel

Last week I tried to learn how to make biodiesel (a substitute for petroleum diesel that can be made
from plant & animal sourced oils), home made biodiesel. How do I make my own Biodiesel processor? I want to make my own biodiesel processor to make diesel fuel out of used vegetable oil. Will biodiesel be made in home ? can we do that ?.

The science behind biodiesel & the DIY (Do It Yourself) procedures for making it at home using a process known as esterification is not covered in this website. The following links and many others provide substantial information:
