How to Make Bioethanol
August 11th, 2008Last month, I tried to learn how to make bioethanol. Could you make bioethanol?
Bioethanol or ethanol is a biofuel that is traditionally produced from the fermentation of starch or sugar crops such as corn, sugar beet and sugar cane. Bioethanol can also be produced from other feedstocks, such as jatropha or switchgrass. It can also be derived from cellulose, grass or even waste materials. This is known as second generation bioethanol.
Bioethanol is an important renewable energy source. Bioethanol can be blended with petroleum for use in petroleum-engine vehicles. Bioethanol is a high octane fuel and has replaced lead as an octane enhancer in petrol. The most common blend is 10% ethanol and 90% petrol (E10). Vehicle engines require no modifications to run on E10 and vehicle warranties are unaffected also. Only flexible fuel vehicles can run on up to 85% ethanol and 15% petrol blends (E85). As premium fuel, the demand is so high. Bioethanol is also an environment friendly alternative fuel for motor vehicle and stove. In addition, bioethanol is also used in cosmetic and drink industry.
